John W. McCarthy, Rappahannock County Administrator, announced that Rappahannock County is initiating several new programs to protect the quality of surface water in the county’s streams, ponds and rivers. This initiative is funded in part by the Virginia Water Quality Improvement Fund (WQIF), in partnership with RappFLOW, the Culpeper Soil & Water Conservation District (CSWCD), and the County Health Department.

There are four main components in this initiative, which has been in the planning stages for over a year:

1) Septic systems improvement cost-sharing program;

2) Erosion & Sedimentation Control program;

3) Stormwater Management ordinance; and

4) Watershed protection review of County ordinances.

RappFLOW’s roles in the initiative include public outreach and education, and volunteer staff work for the programs. The CSWCD is providing technical assistance, technical training for excavators, and project management.
