We will notice the summer solstice, and discuss several upcoming projects such as a field day for children and public to learn macroinvertebrate sampling for water quality; Trout Unlimited Fishing Camp; maps for improving trout stream habitats; updates for the County comprehensive plan; maintaining the rain garden; environmental improvements in the Town of Washington. Public meeting about water quality in the Hazel, Hughes, Rush and Thornton River WatershedsWhen: Thursday, April 23rd, 7PM Where: Washington Fire Hall, 10 Firehouse Lane The Draft Total Maximum Daily Load Implementation Plan (TMDL-IP) to improve water quality in the Hazel, Hughes, Rush and Thornton Rivers is now complete. Representatives from the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and other state and local agencies will present the plan, answer questions and receive comments. The plan was initiated in July 2008 and is based on input from local stakeholders as well as state and federal agencies through a number of local meetings. All are welcome to participate. Calling All Pond Enthusiasts! Whether you own a pond, or are simply just curious about the possibility of having one, you will want to save time on Thursday evening, March 19, 2009, from 7:00 to 9:00 to attend RappFLOW’s second pond presentation on pond vegetation at the fire hall at Washington Volunteer Fire Department. Two experts in this field, Dr. Lou Verner of Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and Shannon Jones of Virginia Lake Management, will address the specifics of native and nuisance pond vegetation. This approximately one-hour presentation will be followed by a question and answer period during which pond enthusiasts can ask questions of the experts, get information on specific situations, and walk home with lots of material on the subject. Public Meeting on Our Impaired Streams March 22 March 15, 2007, RappFLOW meeting to focus on Riparian Buffers Initiative and Impaired Streams Study On Thursday Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m., you are invited to join a discussion of our 2007 initiative to assist landowners in improving and protecting the streams. We will also review the findings of the VA Department of Environmental Quality’s study of our impaired streams, in preparation for the March 22 Public Meeting, at the county library. The March 15th meeting will be in the RappFLOW meeting room in Sperryville, next to the old Schoolhouse at the corner of Routes 211 and 522. February 22, 2007, special workshop on the Old Schoolhouse Buffer Restoration Project On Thursday Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m., you are invited to join a workshop to plan the Old Schoolhouse Buffer Restoration Project. We are considering the site plan, removal of invasives, selection and acquisition of trees and shrubs and grasses to plant, design of trails and educational markers, site preparation, recruiting volunteers, and overall timeline.
